A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. Colombia's stunning diversity — from the colonial streets of Cartagena to the Andean highlands of Bogotá — has nurtured talented cinematographers like Rodrigo Prieto AMC ASC (Mexican-born, with deep Colombian production ties) and local DPs whose work captures the country's vibrant visual energy.

We connect you with experienced Directors of Photography who understand both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at Dynamo Studios in Bogotá or on location along the Caribbean coast, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility, supported by Colombia's generous film incentive program managed by Proimágenes.

Colombian DPs from the Embrace of the Serpent generation to today's auteur cinema

Here is how the work shapes up. Colombia's Director of Photography roster has been rebuilt around a generation of award-winning cinematographers who put the country on the festival map: David Gallego, whose ARRI Amira black-and-white anthropological frame for Ciro Guerra's Embrace of the Serpent (Oscar-nominated 2016) led directly to Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Memoria (Cannes Jury Prize 2021) and Birds of Passage in 2018; Mauricio Vidal, who shot Alejandro Landes's Monos on Sony Venice 2 with Atlas Orion anamorphics for the Sundance 2019 Jury Prize; Sergio Iván Castaño on Franco Lolli's Litigante; Paulo Pérez on Laura Mora's Los Reyes del Mundo (San Sebastián Golden Shell 2022); plus Mateo Londoño, Iván Mazo Sandoval, and the wider Apichatpong collaborator Diego García.

The ACE Colombia (Asociación Colombiana de Cinematografía) bench under that headline tier provides another roughly 150 vetted DPs across Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena, and the Caribbean and Pacific coasts — feature, documentary, telenovela, commercial, and sites-series experts who came up through Universidad Nacional, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana's Centro Ático, and Black Magic Design certification programs.

Engagements begin with a brief, reference deck, and budget envelope, then narrow to curated showreels and direct conversations before booking is locked. Our DPs are fluent across ARRI Alexa 35 and Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice 2, and RED V-Raptor 8K packages drawn from Cinetech Bogotá, 5.1 Cine, LaBu Films, Reel Films, Imagen Latina, and AndaluCine Medellín, with lens options spanning Atlas Orion anamorphics (the Monos look), Cooke S7/i, Angénieux Optimo zooms, and ARRI Signature Primes. Most carry working relationships with the focus pullers, gaffers, and key grips they prefer to bring with them — first-AC training tracks through Universidad Nacional and PUJ Centro Ático keep the camera-department pipeline today's.

Pre-production days cover shot lists, lighting plans, lens tests, and tech scouts across Bogotá's La Candelaria and Monserrate, Cartagena's UNESCO Walled City and Castillo San Felipe (heritage-zone protocols apply), Medellín's Comuna 13 and Aburrá Valley, the Sierra Nevada / Ciudad Perdida hike-in, and the Pacific Chocó with its 13,000mm annual rainfall. Bilingual EN/ES joint work is standard, Proimágenes CINA / FFC tax credit paperwork is handled inside the same camera-department contract, and ATA carnet coordination through DIAN clears imported gear cleanly.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

We offer DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and international broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project requirements.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production requirements and rental availability.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented equipment. We coordinate equipment sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-provided equipment.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Colombia?

Yes. We can source international DPs for shoots in Colombia, handling work permits and logistics. We also provide Colombian DPs for international productions requiring local cinematography talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is typically billed separately. Equipment, camera assistants, and overtime are additional based on project scope.

Productions in Colombia that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Drone Videography, and Underwater Camera Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Production Services.
